The homeowner had constant basement dampness each spring. Previous owner had added extensions to two downspouts but the rear eavestroughs were still discharging close to the foundation wall.
Original eavestroughs were a mis-matched combination of 4-inch and 5-inch sections, several joints leaking. Rear slope had no downspout at the low end — all water was overflowing onto the splash block and running toward the foundation. Fascia boards were soft in two sections from long-term overflow.
Scope considerations
The root cause was a missing downspout on the rear low corner — all the water from the back half of the roof had nowhere to go except over the edge. Welland's clay-heavy soil doesn't absorb surface water quickly, so anything deposited near the foundation finds its way in. Routing the rear downspouts underground to daylight at the property edge is the right long-term solution here. With the micro-mesh covers, this system should run for 10+ years without cleaning.
