What are 6 trends that will improve the value of your home?

Updated: 7 days ago

Trends may come and go, but houses are always accruing value and there is something to be said about staying ahead of the trends and selling in a buyers market.  A home renovation can increase the value of your home and the best part is, you get to enjoy the change while it’s adding value. Here are 6 exterior home improvements that will increase the value of your house, and overall just look great.

  1. Glass doors are becoming more popular as people want to connect with nature more. Good indoor outdoor flow? You’ll also see energy savings as natural light is coming in through the window so the indoor lights do not need to be turned on, which will in turn save money on electricity.

  1. Something that is a bit less tangible but is absolutely real is how sunlight improves mood. Sunlight boosts serotonin via the retina and can improve sleep.  Tell me, who doesn’t like sleep? Smith’s Home Services can install a skylight on your roof to turn a dingy, dark room into a sun-bathed oasis.

  1. Metal roofs are an excellent accessory to a house.  They can keep the elements away while providing some of the best ventilation that money can buy.  It’s definitely a pretty penny, as it isn’t as common as GAF fiberglass shingles.  On average a metal roof will last roughly around 40 years to 80 years.  Under the best of circumstances, a metal roof can last for 200 years.  The only downside is that it can be quite expensive to install a metal roof. In Ontario, it can cost around 7-16 dollars per square foot.

  1. Outdoor living spaces are one of the more underrated elements to adding value to a home.  It’s extra space to relax while using up that space for more livable conditions.  Having an empty backyard isn’t bad, but building a deck or a gazebo means that space can be used for work or relaxation in a meaningful way. Smith’s Home Services has built fences, decks, gazebos and many other outdoor spaces for many clients over the 30 years we’ve been in business.

  1. Sustainable materials are becoming extremely popular.  As more and more science confirms the rapidly changing climate, consumers want to do their part.  Sustainable materials are more expensive but offer long term money saving costs. Smith’s Home Services has many sustainable options and we can help you choose something you’ll love for your outdoor renovation.

  1. Finally, smart technology integration.  Want to be able to control the thermostat from home?  Use an app from a smartphone (which are extremely common).  There are already security cameras on the market that can connect to a smart via app. There are fridges that will connect with a phone and if all access is allowed and the account is synced, it will automatically purchase groceries. Now granted, technology like this can be overwhelming for some people but the data doesn’t lie. 3 out of 5 houses have integrated smart technology.  This trend is only going to rise.
